5th Grade Lesson Plan

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.5.1

Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions with diverse partners.

1st

Ask students, “How many of you have used a phone, tablet, or computer this week?”

Turn and talk

“Have you ever seen something online that made you uncomfortable, confused, or upset?”

Share Out

“Today we’re going to talk about what it means to be a good citizen online; someone who is safe, respectful, and makes smart choices on the internet.”

Write these 4 big ideas on the board

  • Be Safe

  • Be Respectful

  • Think First

  • Balance is Important

Brainstorm what each big idea means (Below are some starters)

  • Be Safe: Don’t share personal info (address, school, passwords)

  • Be Respectful: Use kind words, no bullying or gossiping

  • Think First: Ask: Would I want a teacher or parent to see this?

  • Balance: Screens are fun, but too much can make us feel tired, moody, or distracted

2nd

3rd

Split the class into small groups and give each group a Digital Dilemma Card (examples below). Ask them to:

  • Read the situation

  • Talk about: What would a good digital citizen do?

  • Share their group’s response with the class

Digital Dilemma Card

  1. Someone in your class posts a mean comment about your friend online. What do you do?

  2. You get a message from someone you don’t know asking for your picture.

  3. You want to play your favorite game, but your mom said it’s screen free time.

  4. You found a funny video and want to post it, but it shows your friend without asking.

4th

Time to reflect. Ask open ended questions with either a turn and talk or share out.

“Why is it important to be a good digital citizen?”

“What’s one rule you want to follow the next time you’re online?”
